busting out moves on Zoom

Hi friend,

May today bring with it....

Silliness.

Maybe you make a funny face to a stranger's baby while waiting in line for coffee. Maybe you make a funny face to YOURSELF while you're waiting for someone to hop on Zoom. Maybe you make a silly sound right this instant.

When was the last time you danced on a work call?

Let me rephrase. Have you EVER danced on Zoom?

Unfathomable, right.

This week we had a dance outro to close out our call for AuthenTech, my group coaching program for senior women in tech.

Picture this.

We talked about the heavy pressure of finding our next engineering role while simultaneously feeling paralyzed about what to do next. And how damn terrifying this can feel.

We shared about how the holidays can feel sort of bittersweet.

And brainstormed ideas around roles which have a more direct impact on people. Specifically for a woman in LA who is now thinking - I really want to do more.

And for that special moment in time, we were not alone.

We felt supported, seen, and inspired.

To celebrate that moment we danced.

Cameras on, cameras off.

We released whatever felt right.

The song? Doobie Brothers, "What A Fool Believes."

And someone posted this right after:

my feels after dancing out of that session: 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 💃 💃 💃 💃 😭 🥹 🤪🤪🤪🤪 😍 😍 😍 😍

What song, my friend, would you dance to? Reply back.

Going-ons I'm excited for:

  • I'm running a free coaching open house for anyone who is interested in AuthenTech's next cohort.
Come get coached or listen in! I uh, accidentally scheduled it on my wedding day (just the civil ceremony).
  • Our next cohort of AuthenTech is kicking off! Which means more dance parties, transformations, and friendships.

One woman who just joined is a software engineer who wants to open up a space to teach kids about farm animals. Come join us.

Shiny things that caught my eye

  • The song we danced to as our outro during our group call for AuthenTech. What a yacht rock banger.

  • Martha Beck's book Beyond Anxiety keeps catching my eye. I haven't read it yet - have you?
Several people have quoted "creativity can soothe anxiety" to me this week, which is something Martha talks about a lot.

To silliness! To funky chicken dancing!

Dear friend, I want to tell you a story about raspberries. One of my clients planted a raspberry cane last year. Just a stick in the dirt. No leaves. No roots to speak of. Nothing that promised it would thrive. She didn’t expect much and that was kind of the ✨magic✨ of it. The raspberry was planted out of curiosity more than a commitment. But by the end of the season, it had taken over her garden. Branches everywhere. Bright green leaves. Even a few small berries. It wasn’t supposed to grow...

Dear friend, I hope today brings with it chuckles and chortles. Laughter, essentially. May you find something that gives you the afternoon giggles and lets you take a break from the screen, to be like "damn. that was funny." I used to say this line all the time: "I help women in tech fall back in love with their careers." And for a while, it felt right. I said it on LinkedIn, intro calls, workshops. I said it everywhere. (kind of like a parrot 🦜) And it resonated at the time with what I was...

Greetings from Kansas, Reader! Let me say that again. Kansas! I'm going to take a poll - how many of you have been here before? ....that's what I thought. Literally the only person I could think of from Kansas was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. And well, she wasn't real. I just spent the last day flying for 10+ hours to arrive in Lawrence, Kansas (more on why in another newsletter). And I do this thing every time I land somewhere. I start picturing my life there. The possibilities. Could I make...
