I got roasted on Reddit

Hi friend,

May today bring with it....

Confidence.

Hey, you. You. You've got this. I know you do and more importantly, so do you.

So, I had a pretty humbling experience the other day.

I noticed an uptick in people coming to my website and after further sleuthing, saw it was coming from Reddit.

"Interesting," I thought as I clicked on.

"I wonder if someone recommended me and is giving me a shout out, singing my praises!"

Luckily, I was able to trace the link back to the subreddit.

And to my own mortification, it was a post COMPLETELY ROASTING me.

The original poster shared that their client was looking to create a website and they shared mine as an example of what they wanted to replicate.

Flattering!

But oh boy oh boy, look at the comments.

I'll let you read, cause it really speaks for itself:

Oof. Oof! 2 years ago, this would have wrecked me.

Because being seen as egocentric is my absolute nightmare.

And yeah, I flinched when I read it.

But then I laughed.

I sent it to a friend.

I even updated my website because, honestly… some of the feedback was valid. 😂

Here’s the thing:

Taking up space takes COURAGE. ❤️
Not everyone will love what you do.
Some will get it and feel seen.
Others will think it’s too much.
That’s okay.

Because as I’ve gotten braver about sharing my work, I’ve also built resilience.

And what I’ve gained from that far outweighs any random internet critique:
→ Helping incredible, smart, creative women get unstuck and chase their dream careers
→ Building a business that lets me be closer to my 92-year-old grandmother in Hawaii 🌴
→ Hearing from former coworkers who say "keep going!" (like the wonderful Joe Marty below!)

Your job isn’t to please everyone.
It’s to keep going. To keep showing up.

Where would you like to take up more space? (reply back - I'd love to hear your answer ❤️)

Going-ons I'm excited for:

  • I've been loving snack-sized chats for the ease of 15-minutes and the love of talking to other people. I invite you to snack with me.
  • I'm going to be giving a talk about starting a business or side hustle (very much through my own experience as a coach/consultant). You can join us!

Signing off with a very cute (but sad-faced) picture of my parents' dog,

Sarah

Dear friend, I want to tell you a story about raspberries. One of my clients planted a raspberry cane last year. Just a stick in the dirt. No leaves. No roots to speak of. Nothing that promised it would thrive. She didn’t expect much and that was kind of the ✨magic✨ of it. The raspberry was planted out of curiosity more than a commitment. But by the end of the season, it had taken over her garden. Branches everywhere. Bright green leaves. Even a few small berries. It wasn’t supposed to grow...

Dear friend, I hope today brings with it chuckles and chortles. Laughter, essentially. May you find something that gives you the afternoon giggles and lets you take a break from the screen, to be like "damn. that was funny." I used to say this line all the time: "I help women in tech fall back in love with their careers." And for a while, it felt right. I said it on LinkedIn, intro calls, workshops. I said it everywhere. (kind of like a parrot 🦜) And it resonated at the time with what I was...

Greetings from Kansas, Reader! Let me say that again. Kansas! I'm going to take a poll - how many of you have been here before? ....that's what I thought. Literally the only person I could think of from Kansas was Dorothy from Wizard of Oz. And well, she wasn't real. I just spent the last day flying for 10+ hours to arrive in Lawrence, Kansas (more on why in another newsletter). And I do this thing every time I land somewhere. I start picturing my life there. The possibilities. Could I make...
